Why I Finally Took Action on My Mental Health

Why I Finally Took Action on My Mental Health

Everytime I speak someone asks me, ‘why did you start Self Love Beauty’. In the beginning it was because of my own insecurities, lack of confidence and self-esteem along with not feeling like I belonged. Now it is about helping individuals have the tools to help them overcome obstacles and succeed.

In the transformation of taking SLB from an entity to a nonprofit organization, I too was going through a transformation myself. I was at a low in my life with my mental health and I was not even ‘struggling well’, I was instead just struggling. I was not my best self – meaning I was cutting corners at work, I did not have the motivation to exceed expectations and I was not the best friend or family member to be around. I was in a way the negative person that’s energy was affecting others. While in the moment, I knew something was wrong, I just told myself it was a season and that after x, y and z, I would get over this hump. This ‘season’ continued and I found myself not only mentally struggling but now it was formulating into physical health issues. I was gaining weight held in by unhappiness and stress and was always tired. The final straw came when I showed up to work feeling unwell and someone told me I looked really white and not myself so I went home and I ended up staying at home not being able to get out of bed for a week. I remember the tears that week so frustrated and upset that I let it get that far and I knew I needed to make a change.

I seeked support, I worked on myself, I implemented tools and I found myself again…slowly.

I finally took action because while I had made so much progress, I was allowing myself to pedal backwards and I knew if I was going to transform SLB, I had to transform in a positive direction for myself. This process is still underway but taking action was step one.

There are many days I reflect back to that moment and realize the reason I do what I do is so SLB can teach the tools to others so no one has to hit the point I did.

So here are a few key tips I want to leave you with:

  1. Seek help: You are never alone unless you make yourself that way. There are so many people out there willing to support you
  2. Set boundaries: Make your yes and no list and stick to it. Your leaders will give you as much as they want until you tell them otherwise and same with your friends and family
  3. Invest in yourself: I cannot stress this enough. Invest in yourself with a coach, with groups, with self-care. Self-love is about loving yourself and helping yourself grow.
  4. Find your circle and love them heard: Who you surround yourself with makes a big difference in your growth
  5. Give back: Find time for giving and find time to love on others

While these are just a few, these are my top things that have helped me with my mental health. I am still on my journey like we all are but I am so proud of how far I have come and you should be too!
